At first glance, she looks broken down, beaten into the ground by the very esteem in which she holds herself. But then her eyes flit upwards to meet yours, eyes full of glinting steel and flashing fire. Ask her what she wants to be, and she will tell you she wants to be
a nurse
a teacher
a philosopher
a scientist
a weaver
an author
a photographer
a politician
a missionary
an activist.
She dreams of the future, forgets her past, reaches into the stream of time to pick out her path. Through her ragged shirt and knotted hair and tattered jeans, she aspires to bring the world into the light and block out the dark that made her the way she is in the first place.
Catch it before it’s too late! See that firefly? It’s fluttering right at your eyes. You have only to reach up and catch it in between your cupped hands. Grasp it before it’s gone, because when it leaves, it sometimes leaves for good.
It’s an opportunity. It’s right there. Catch it and let it light up your life while you can.
I might end up as a cat lady, but at least I can be a fit cat lady.
Once my grandfather told me a story about when he was stationed on a small South Pacific island during World War II and it went something like this-
